ABS trouble

I picked up my first Subaru, a 2011 Outback at auction last winter and really liked it. But the first time I drove it in snow, things got scary. During a snowstorm, the ABS kept kicking in and completely killed my braking. I was only going 10mph downhill and still slid over 80 feet. Pressing the brake harder didn't help so I had to be super gentle just to stay in control. In an emergency, I don't think I could've stopped at all, any ideas on what could've caused this?

My guess is it seems like your ABS kicked in due to poor traction, most likely from worn or wrong tires for snow. Check your ABS sensors, they might be dirty or faulty

Crap tires.. People think just because it is a Subaru that somehow that makes it able to overcome bad tires. Realistically bad tires are just bad.

Yeah Subaru's AWD can't fix bad tires. I underestimated how important good snow tires are, it is time to upgrade and give my Outback the traction it really needs. Thanks

Auction cars almost always need brake work. Get it looked at before you drive in snow again - stuff like old fluid and worn pads can definitely throw off the ABS.
